Sommelier Pick up the Week: 2014 Alexana Chardonnay
Sommelier Pick of the Week & First of 2018:
2014 Alexana Chardonnay, Willamette, Oregon
Anyone who knows me, knows when it comes white wine, there is Chardonnay and then there is everything else. So, it no surprise that the first wine of the year is a Chardonnaty. I first learn about Alexana Chardonnay last year at the Oregon Chardonnay Celebration, when I meet John, the President of the winery. John is a very cool guy, but his Chardonnay spoke for itself. At Slate Wine Bar + Bistro, we are proud that for the most part of 2017, we have served Alexana by the glass, where in a lot of establishments, only serve Alexana by the bottle. To sum of the wine, its the most refreshing Chardonnay with some key traditional Chardonnay notes of vanilla and citrus.
Winemakers notes: Double hand sorted, whole cluster pressed and fermented for 21-28 days. Once fermentation is complete, the juice is then aged for 10 months in a combination of stainless steel and oak.
Food pairing recommendations: Since this is a well balance Chardonnay with nice acidity, that is not oaky or buttery, I can make food recommendations that usually go with Sauvignon Blancs, and without over-fatiguing one’s palate, including pastas and risottos. This Chardonnay matches perfect with any fish, and great to start off any meal.
